Poona Junction railway station & Burma

Postby plbramham » Sun Jun 23, 2013 12:19 pm

British serviceman at Poona Junction railway station (I refuse to use that American term “train-station” which seems to be creeping into our language!)

I am dating it as Second World War period as the serviceman (not Border) appears to be wearing slip on cloth shoulder badges. It is certainly before 1951 when the GIP – Great Indian Peninsula Railway, became the Central Railway.
The GIP’s first 21 mile line ran from Bombay to Tanah in 1853. The extension to Poona opened in 1858. In 1925 the government took over the running of the GIP rail system.

Many Border Regt soldiers passed through Poona, especially 2/4th Bn during WW1 who were part of the 6th (Poona) Division after they relieved the 1st battalion who had been based in Maymyo Burma from 1910. The 1st Bn were also in Burma in 1889, and their predecessors the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot were there in 1875. The2nd Bn were also at Poona in in 1941, and served in Burma in 1902.

During the Second World War Border Regiment battalions who served in Burma were: 2nd Bn. In 20th Indian Division; 4th Bn in 23 Brigade as 34 and 55 Columns; and 9th Bn in 17th Indian Division.
