WW1 medal found in a field at Sandwith

Postby Berenice » Thu Jan 08, 2015 4:29 pm

From The Whitehaven News of 31st December 2014. A Sandwith local has found a WW1 Victory medal in a field with his metal detector. It was badly corroded but has been identified as having belonged to 4226 Private William Nulty of the Border Regiment. Research has suggested that his mother lived in nearby Kells.

It would be nice if the medal could be cleaned up. I wonder if Nulty threw it away after receiving it?

A warning,

Especially with all the WW1 centenary articles being published.

Be careful abut copying and posting "recent" newspaper cuttings as they are still "in copyright".

You are OK to transcribe them ( up to a certain length) but not to reproduce them, as "original images," in any form without permission.

I don't think anyone would ever take issue with it, ( civil, not criminal offence - would not be worth their court costs) but strictly speaking, it is illegal.

Regards Paul

Looks like it's going to take some careful cleaning: Pte. Nulty's medal at CumbriaCrack.com.

No harm in linking to the newspaper article. Is this the article? Reunited - War Medal Returned.
In memory of John Bardgett (15309 L/Cpl.), 11th Border Regiment who died 1st July 1916.

That's a follow-up article and thanks for linking to it. A story with a happy ending.
