Karachi c.1910

Postby plbramham » Sat Dec 20, 2014 6:38 pm

A very small, poor quality image I have recently obtained. Apparently shows Border Regiment guard of honour greeting some "dignitary" at Karachi, off the gangplank of a ship/steamer?

I can only presume that it is members of 1st battalion as their record shows;
1908 Madras, 1910 Burma: Maymyo, 1915.01 Rugby 87 Bde, 29 Div , 1915.03 Egypt.

Any further info. appreciated,

Cheers Paul

I can't help with the picture Paul but I am wondering when in 1910 the 1st Battalion were at Karachi. As Maymyo is about a couple of thousand miles from Karachi, were the Borders going to Maymyo on their way from Karachi or was it vice versa with maybe some other stops inbetween? Do you have a list of their movements throughout the year?

Yes, Obviously Burma is a very long way from Karachi, so maybe the 1st battalion were in Karachi on the way in/out? ( Or maybe en route from Madras to Burma?)
The 1st Bn. were only ones on the Indian sub continent at that time, as 2nd Battalion were in the UK, as were ( obviously) the 3rd battalion ( depot). The 4th Bn. ( territorials), did not go to India until very late 1914.
I am also wondering if possibly the photo is from a "broken" , incorrectly captioned album, and perhaps shows the South Wales Borderers, or The King's Own Scottish Borderers, ( I haven't checked their locations at this time) NOT The Border Regiment ( photo is too small, blurred. and indistinct to check any form of insignia),
Paul.
