After the 1881 amalgamation of the 34th and 55th Regiments of Foot to form the The Regiment, the numerical terms remained in use with the 34th for the 1st Btn The Border Regiment, and the 55th for the 2nd Btn The Border Regiment.
This officer's blazer button dates from 1926 and the "34" denotes it is for the 1st Btn.
