1880 testament

Postby plbramham » Sun May 22, 2016 10:30 am

I recently acquired a pocket sized ( see my thumb on photo for scale) mini testament and common prayer book presented to a 55th (Westmoreland) Regiment solider when he departed for India in 1880. That of course was the year before the 55th (Westmoreland - with the "e") and 34th Cumberland Regiments combined to form The Border Regiment in 1881. It was presented by a Mrs Morton ( I guess an issue to all soldiers) to service no.2135 Private William Langford.
I cannot trace him. "Ancestry" is not great on Victorian soldiers period.

It is in pretty good condition, except the cover of the testament is loose. The pages are "unthumbed" so I guess he was maybe not religious!

Anyway, an interesting item, and probably a very rare survivor?

Regards Paul

No sign of him on findmypast either. There are a number of William Langfords but not in 55th or Border Regt.

A super little piece of history, just a shame there doesn't seem to be a paper trail for William Langford. He was a soldier and the military love to keep records, there must be something, somewhere. Maybe the museum has something on him.
In memory of John Bardgett (15309 L/Cpl.), 11th Border Regiment who died 1st July 1916.
