Border Badge in the Khyber Pass

Postby westmorland » Sat May 17, 2008 2:44 pm

30 years ago I drove through the Khyber Pass that links Afghanistan with northern Pakistan.Several British regiments had left badges in the pass, where they had sometimes shed blood. The Border badge is in the centre of the image.

What are the badges made of Harry ?
They look like either stone or metal, but I'm not sure which....
Great photo, by the way, thanks for posting it

They look like they are made from stone, either extremely well carved showing expert craftsmanship or maybe from a mould for a concrete mix, I'm not sure either.

Excellent photo Harry!

Can you tell us more about them?

I believe that these badges were installed between the two World Wars.I think that the material used was stone and the badges relief-carved (eg: the stone around the badges was reduced). It would be interesting to know what condition the badges are in today.Harry

I have just come across this photo showing that at some time the Khyber Badges were painted (probably by the Army of Pakistan).

It great to see that they are all still there and survive still, even if they have been painted. The Border Regiment one still looking in good condition!  :DChris

Hi,
I recently saw a photo of this badge with two soldiers beneath ( can't post it as it's not my copyright). It's description said they were 2/4th Btn and dated 1919. Paul
