Western Front 043.JPG

During my recent trip to the Somme I managed to visit the remains of the Assembly trenches in Authuille Wood used by the 11th Batn prior to their attack on 1st July 1916, sadly the photos do not do the place justice. Its a fantastic location and was enhanced by seeing four deer and an Osprey!
Kind regards,

Great photos Scottie. Although (shockingly) I still haven't been this place has a special interest to me as I believe my great grandfather was in this very spot before he was killed shortly after zero hour on the 1st July. It would love to see the place for real but I don't that will happen this year either.

Do feel free to post as many photos as you like that you have taken from your visits, they are interesting to look at, especially for those who haven't yet been ;-)

Excellent pictures, can I have some copies for my site Scottie?

Never been brave enough to enter the wood myself......
It's private land and you may get mistaken by some of the local hunters
for one of the deer you mention :-\

Spike,

yep, its private land and used for hunting by the locals. Fortunatly I was with a local guide who had permission to enter the edge of the woods and we went there on a day there was no shoot planned. Would strongly advise against anybody taking a chance and entering!

Just a short way from Authuille Wood is the Grantaloch, a German strongpoint, these two grenades had been uncovered, there were also two 'stokes morters' nearby as well!
