Cheers Scottie i am led to believe it used to be a cross that sat on top. A real shame but like so many old headstones they don't last the length of time.

I will do Mike, but a big thank you to you for bringing Lance Corporal Mortimer and Fort Napier Cemetery to my attention. I hope to return to South Africa when I can, and I will try to visit this cemetery myself to pay my respects to him and the four other 'Border Boys'there!
