6th Bn war diary transcript October 1916

As the battalion were not in action it's an unusual month's war diary with very little detail of activities, hence basically just a list of awards and movements. Transcription notes & details of those who later became casualties in [square brackets & italics] Paul.

October 1916

31/9/16 LEALVILLERS – Marched from HEDAUVILLE to LEALVILLERS where the Bn went into billets. The following message was received by the Div Commander from Sir H GOUGH Commanding Reserve Army and was to be communicated to all ranks:-
“My best congratulations to you and your Division on their gallant fighting today and throughout the successful operations in which you have been engaged since the capture of the WONDER WORK. You have all done Splendid Work “ (28.9.26)
1/10/16 LEALVILLERS- Bn moved to MONTIGNY LES JONGLEURS in motor buses much to the delight of the troops.
2/10/16 MONTIGNY LES JONGLEURS - Bn marched to CRAGMONT and went into billets where we remained until the end of October.
3/10/16- 31/10/16. CRAGMONT - During the month the following immediate awards were notified:

James, of The Pollard Elms, Upper Clapton, London; husband of Phyllis D. E. Cursham (formerly James), of The Manor House, Thrumpton, Derby.]

Trophies captured from the enemy
Battn R.O. states authority has been obtained to dispose of 6 of the 7 Machine Guns captured by the Battn on 26th & 27th September. They are be sent to the following:-
2 guns to the Mayor of CARLISLE
1 gun to the Mayor of KENDAL
1 gun to the Mayor of WORKINGTON
1 gun to the Mayor of WIGAN
1 gun to BRIG GEN J.R.ERSKINE CMG, MVO Comdg 33rd Inf Bde

The CO feels sure that all ranks heartily approve of this action in this matter.

During this month the following alterations in posting of officers was carried out.

“ W.S.ROSS to command C Coy [ROSS, WILLIAM STUART Captain died 23/07/1917. Age: 25. LA BRIQUE MILITARY CEMETERY NO.2. Son of Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Ross, of 19, Sackville Gardens, Hove, Sussex. Also served in Gallipoli and in Egypt ]

The following officers were posted to the Battalion
