10th Battalion Standing Orders

10th Battalion Standing Orders

Postby plbramham » Fri Feb 08, 2013 7:38 pm

Here’s a very rare (possibly unique?) survivor - a pocket sized copy of The Standing Orders of the 10th battalion The Border Regiment.
I found the very battered booklet on e-bay where it didn’t attract much interest.(Just one other bid!)
It really must be a very scarce item , even if not of much monetary value, as the 10th Battalion only existed for a couple of years during the First World War , so not many of these can have been issued, and of those how many actually still exist? The 10th were formed in October 1914 at Southend as a service battalion of K4 then on 10th April 1915 became a reserve battalion and moved to Billericay. On 1st September 1916 they were absorbed into Training Reserve Battalions of 4th Reserve Brigade at Seaford
I guess these standing orders were pretty much the same booklet for all battalions? Perhaps the printer just changed the relevant number and CO’s name between print runs for one battalion and another?
I’ll attach a few sample pages below. Paul

What a great find Paul. And going to a good home means it will be well looked after for many more years to come :-)

This is really surprising. Rare, collectable.....yes, I am quite surprised this it didn't attract more attention, even in its battered exterior state. The pages look remarkably clean apart from some spotting and discolouration at the edges and corners. It might not have attracted much interest on ebay but it IS an interesting piece, especially for anyone with an interest in anything Border Regiment (like myself) ;-)
In memory of John Bardgett (15309 L/Cpl.), 11th Border Regiment who died 1st July 1916.
