Interesting and comprehensive! I think you have mentioned your mate before, or at least his name sounds familiar.

Jonathan actually joined but hasn't been on much unfortunately.
He tells me that their were 2 Borders that were shot at dawn a Johnson and McClair of 2/Borders who were executed for desertion together. August 1918 he thinks.
Anyone got any info. i am really interested now.

It definately is McClair i have just found his Service Records on Ancestry and it mentions that he was shot at dawn.
Also it is Johnson.
Will ask Jonathan's permission to post them onto the forum don't want to steal his thunder.

I reckon they are the right guys; there is only one McClair and the Johnson, after looking at the others in a CWGC search, is the best match. Also their service numbers are only 2 apart: 20035 and 20037. Maybe they were buddies or met when signing up.

Their Records have them living in the same house so they must have been mates.
They were living in London and came to Carlisle to join up.
Where should i post their records Chris when i get round to it.

I guess living in the same house definitely makes them known to each other. How close they were is something we may never know. I mean we all have mates, you know the kind of friends that get on well enough with and see them from time to time but wouldn't consider them to be anything more than just a "friend" and then you have best mates, really close friends, which is something different entirely. Maybe, they were close buddies, which is why they signed up at the same time and, ultimately, deserted at the same time. I would like to have known their reasons for deserting (apart from the terrible awfulness of war).

Will be interesting to find out more Mike.

I guess the records, if you do post them, could go into the 2nd Battalion and Roll of Honour & Remembrance forums.
