5th Bn., Border Reg. mascot "Winkles"

5th Bn., Border Reg. mascot "Winkles"

Have been to Workington library and found this piece of interesting reading.

September 23 1914.
It is all about a Private MacDonald from Cockermouth who trained a fox cub and took it to Barrow with him, and the regiment adopted it as their mascot.

But it states that they were going to take it to the continent does any one know if they did.

Mike.

What a great name for a pet fox. I can see it now perched on the handlebars of Pte. MacDonald's bike. As to whether it went with the men to the continent, I don't know, sorry.

Hmm.. Exact opposite to today importing rabies FROM France eh?!! I believe an officer took a hunting horn to Arnhem in WW2 - perhaps has not an actual fox though!

Yes, looks like you found Winkles. Great find Mike!

Is the first newspaper article from the Workington Star?
