Mr. and Mrs. Sydney of Brown’s Place, Seaton, received official word on Tuesday that their son Lance-Corpl., Alf Sydney, 17399, D. Coy., Lonsdale Battalion, who was reported missing on July 10th, is presumed to have been killed on that date or since.

The following letter was received by his brother Wm. Sydney, from 28210 Sergt. C. Snowden, 11th Border Regt., L.21764, Lager, Sechfeld, Bavaria, who is a prisoner of war: -

“Dear Sir,

In reply to a letter received from the Carlisle Citizens League, dated 22/12/17 to Sergt. A.E. Reid, of D. Coy., 11th Border Regt., asking for information of your brother, 17399 Lance-Corpl. Alf Sydney, who was reported missing 10th July, 1917, the day I was taken prisoner. I am writing in answer to the letter, as being in the same Platoon as your brother. It is with my deepest sympathy and that of my chum, Sergt. A.E. Reid, that I have to inform you that your brother was killed on the morning of July 10th, 1917. I am proud to tell you your brother was a good soldier, one of the best, and he died doing his duty. I will close this letter with my deepest sympathy, and that of all the boys of D. Coy who are here with me.”
