Thanks Yorkie, this is an interesting item and it looks in excellent condition, including the crest. :-)

I haven't seen one like this before.

At the moment, no. I can't make it out either :-(

When I get handwriting I can't identify I tend to show my friends and get their suggestions; sometimes it leads to dead ends but other times they see things you don't.

It looks to me like it's signed George (Sergt), though the right bracket is a bit weak.

Chris, that crest looks very much like a Kings Crown version of one of the Victoria letterhead crests I posted. Obviously being 8th (Service) Btn, this card must be First World War. Wouldn't it be great if it was sent during the 1914 Christmas Truce! ( Though obviously the 8th were not in France at that time) Paul

Later thought, Wouldn't it be great if "George" turned out to be the unidentified Sergeant in the classic 8th Btn photo of the Kendal Pals in Ovillers trenches on 15th July 1916 - relevant portion of photo attached ( Has anyone ever actually named the Sgt on that photo?) I donated a framed copy of the whole picture with a cap badge to Kendal Town Council for the 90th anniversary of the Somme in 2006, and it is displayed on the Mayor's Parlour mantelpiece in the town hall, Paul

Could this be "George", or do you know his name?

It certainly could be Ian but I don't see a right bracket :-\

Yes it does, I just put the images side by side and they are similar. The Christmas truce is a nice sentimental thought but as you say they were not in France then, it would be another 9 months before they land so in this case it would have to be something else.

I took the line/dash/stroke at the end to be a half formed right bracket.
